Plural Nouns
Words for more than one person, place, animal or thing are called plural nouns. Most nouns can be made plural by adding –s in the end.
Noun + s
Orange + s – oranges
Pencil + s – pencils
Girl + s – girls
Noun + es – for singular nouns ending in ch, sh, s, ss and x, we add –es to make it plural.
Bus + es – buses
Branch + es – branches
Bush + es – bushes
Glass + es – glasses
Box + es – boxes
Noun + ies – for singular nouns ending in y, change y to i and add –es.
Baby – babies
Lily – lilies
City – cities
If the word ending in y has a vowel before y, we add –s to make it plural.
Key – keys
Boy – boys
Noun – f + es
For singular nouns ending in f, change f to v and add –es
Leaf – leaves
Calf – calves
Wolf – wolves
Some nouns ending in f do not follow this rule.
Roof – roofs
Cliff – cliffs
Noun – fe + ves
For singular nouns ending in fe, change f to v and add –s.
Knife – knives
Life – lives
Nouns ending in o can be made plural by adding –s or –es in the end.
Noun + s rhino – rhinos
Zoo – zoos
Noun + es mango – mangoes
Potato – potatoes
Some plural nouns are completely different from their singular forms. We use a different word for plural form.
